Simon Stålenhag is a Swedish artist and author known for his stunning artwork that blends science fiction and nostalgia. He was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1984, and began painting and drawing from a young age. He studied industrial design at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm.
Stålenhag first gained recognition for his digital paintings of Swedish landscapes and small towns with futuristic elements. His work often features old-fashioned cars, small, isolated communities, and giant, otherworldly machines. He has cited video games, science fiction films, and the 1980s as major inspirations for his work.
In addition to his art, Stålenhag is also a writer. His books often feature stories that are connected to his paintings, creating a cohesive universe that is simultaneously dystopian and whimsical. His most popular books include “Tales from the Loop” and “Things from the Flood,” both of which explore a world where technology has advanced beyond our current capabilities.
Stålenhag’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and galleries around the world, including the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark and the National Science and Media Museum in the UK. He was also a consultant and visual designer for the Amazon Prime Video series “Tales from the Loop,” which was based on his books.
